On April 28th, the “Stanca Scholz-Cionca” Center for Asian Studies hosted a workshop where students from our Japanese Language and Literature program learned about Japanese calligraphy. The participants practiced writing various words on rice paper, using traditional ink and brushes, such as 月子 (tsukiko, moon child), 東京 (Tōkyō), 日本 (Nihon, Japan), 中国 (Chūgoku, China), 愛 (ai, love). In addition to learning new kanji and practicing writing in Japanese overall, students explored the art of 墨絵 (sumie), Japanese ink painting, and drew cats and bunnies. A wonderful and creative event, and the perfect way to experience Japanese language and culture together!
