On November 12th, Derya Alim from CSEA was invited to speak during Professor Santiago Pérez Isasi’s Advanced Research seminar for master’s and PhD students. The presentation delved into the origins and early stages of Japanese and American theater. The comparative approach covered, among other ideas, the origins of both arts, how political and military leaders censored or commissioned plays to serve their political agendas, how the cultural elite and the public perceived the two types of theater, and similarities and differences in terms of language, themes, costumes, and stage design. The thought-provoking presentation led to interesting discussions, insightful questions, and the first step towards a wonderful connection between centers and departments.
